MENDAX – interview with Piotr Szwed ( vocalist of the band Mendax)

Welcome, dear Metal Hellvolution readers. A few days ago I had the pleasure to interview the vocalist of a young death metal band from Poznań called Mendax. Piotr Szwed, who is responsible for the vocal in this band, told me about the band's not-so-old first EP, plans for the future, and many other things. I invite you to read the entire interview with him below.
Sentinel: Where does the name of the Mendax band come from? Is there a deeper story behind its creation, or did you come across it completely by accident?
Piotr Szwed: I've come up with the name still in middle school I think, or at the start of tech school. It means "liar" in Latin. Each of us is a liar to some degree. Be it a pathological one, like Krzysztof Kononowicz, or a lesser one. We mostly lie to ourselves, though. To be specific, at the time I was referring to matters of faith. People trying to escape death run away toward various religions, which provide them with easy answers. And I wouldn't have anything against that if it wasn't for the fact that they are often a political tool and take a toll on societies.
Sentinel: Do you get along musically as a whole band. I mean whether your entire crew listens to the same music, whether you rely on sources, rely on your music, and where do you get the most inspiration for your music. I honestly admit that when I heard your EP for the first time, the sound of guitars immediately reminded me of Swedish death metal, with other bands like Entombed and Dismember.
Piotr: There are some differences between us, but there are even more similarities. Each of us does, of course, listen to music beyond death metal, but when composing songs we always reject the ill-fitting inspirations and try to keep the content true to tradition. I'm glad that the Swedish inspiration is audible, given how no other musical scene has shit out this much gold, haha.
Sentinel: What are your plans for the near future? I mean, after your first great EP, then you will record an EP again, or are you slowly getting ready to record a full-length album?
Piotr: We are currently preparing new songs, although we do not yet have a fixed schedule for the length of the release.
Sentinel: What are your concert plans as well? It is known that the current situation related to the pandemic has stopped the concerts very much, but are I slowly seeing any places where you could play in Poland, and what are your dream metal festivals or places to play live outside our country?
Piotr: A fragile topic, because we just canceled our concert. At the moment we are planning one concert for April, and we are going to have some more playing by then, but when things get better, and when we move on to the realm of guessing, we would really not despise playing the brutal assault or extreme obscene. Of the Polish festivals, we are probably most tempted by Metalmania.
Sentinel: What gives you the greatest inspiration to create songs, do you collect ideas for your works from the environment, private life experiences? or maybe you get them from some books or movies?
Piotr: Definitely life. I'm not sitting in the heads of the guys, but personally, the situation in the country and in the world is so frustrating that I don't need any additional stimulation haha. Although I will not tell you, sometimes I also have something to sneak out of literature, such as on EP - a reference to Beckett's "Waiting for Godot".
Sentinel: If, however, there was such an opportunity soon to organize a concert, or you could play in front of a Polish metal band, what would it be like? Here I mean more, what metal band from our native land you respect very much and also influenced your musical taste and style of playing.
Piotr: Vader, Vader, and VADER again. Without a doubt, our great inspiration and a piece of death metal meat. Besides Vader, I would also mention Betrayer, Azarath, Magnus, Imperator, and Xantotol.
Sentinel: When you create your songs you are very inspired by some metal bands, you look for some melodies from their songs to come up with something of your own, is it usually that you meet during rehearsals and you just come up with your songs very naturally, I mean, you just play, and you start to improvise and strive to create your own style and sound?
Piotr: Usually, we start the songs alone and only then finish the whole piece together during rehearsals. When writing, we do not lean too much over someone else's riffs. Our inspirations are always with us, but rather we have them at the back of our mind.
Sentinel: How did your musical adventure start? I mean, since when have you been playing together, how did you meet as a team, and for about which year have you been playing together? And one more question out of curiosity. Who of you came up with such a band name?
Piotr: Mendax has been around since 2015. Only me stay from the original members. It was different with the rest of the team. First, Dawid (guitarist), who moved here to study, joined. An old friend met me with him, and somehow it happened that he was looking for a band, and he had heard cracks from the previous line-up. We've spotted Tobias (the drummer) with Dawid on some musician group ... Adam (bass) is actually our fresh acquisition. By sight, I know him since middle school, but I didn't know him until a concert. As for the name, how I wrote it before haha.
Sentinel: What is the history of the cover for your first EP and is there any secret behind it, is the cover supposed to convey something important? or rather there is nothing to look for something deeper in it.
Piotr: The graphic design in Mendax is done by me. The cover shows the black matter hidden behind many layers of our subconscious and our body. In order not to elaborate on too much here, it is a somewhat abstract manifestation of a cause-and-effect sequence that is caused by darkness (be it an old trauma or an innate disposition), and the result is a red, aggressive act. It can also be referred to as an album - an aggressive album caused by our frustrations.
Sentinel: What are your biggest inspirations when it comes to the technique and sound of your vocals (Which musicians have influenced your musical development the most) And what musicians have influenced the individual members of your band - Mendax.
Piotr: From the beginning of my vocals, Piotr Wiwczarek, Martin Van Drunen, Mikael Åkerfeldt (Bloodbath period), Craig Pillard, and Dolan Ross were a great inspiration for me. As for the other members, Dawid's were: Rob Barrett, Pat O'Brien, Jeff Hanneman, Chuck Schuldiner, Dimebag Darell. At Adam's: Steve Digiorgio, Les Claypool, Cliff Burton. And with Tobias, especially Trey Williams, George Kollias, James Stewart, and Marc Reign. Although if you think about it, it would definitely be a lot more haha.

Witamy drogich czytelników Metal Hellvolution. Kilka dni temu miałem przyjemność przeprowadzić wywiad z wokalistą młodego death metalowego zespołu z Poznania o nazwie Mendax. Piotr Szwed, który właśnie odpowiedzialny jest za wokal w tym zespole opowiedział mi o nie tak dawnej wydanej pierwszej EP-ce zespołu, planach na przyszłość i o wielu innych rzeczach. Serdecznie zapraszam do przeczytania całego wywiadu z nim, poniżej.
Sentinel: Skąd właśnie taka nazwa zespołu Mendax? Czy kryję się za jej powstaniem jakaś szersza głębsza historia, czy wpadliście na nią zupełnie przypadkowo?
Piotr Szwed: Nazwę wymyśliłem bodajże jeszcze w gimnazjum, bądź na początku technikum. Oznacza ona po łacińsku kłamcę. Każdy z nas jest w pewnym stopniu kłamcą. Czy to patologicznym jak Krzysiek Kononowicz, czy też pomniejszym. Najbardziej jednak okłamujemy siebie. Konkretnie chodziło mi wtedy o kwestie wiary. Ludzie w obawie przed śmiercią uciekają w różne religie, które dają im łatwe odpowiedzi. I nie miałbym nic przeciwko gdyby nie to, że są one często narzędziem politycznym, i odbijają na społeczeństwach szkodliwe piętno.
Sentinel: Czy dogadujecie się muzycznie jako cały zespół. Mam na myśli to czy wasza cała ekipa słucha tej samej muzyki, czy występują jednak jakieś znaczne różnice waszych gustów muzycznych, no i z czego czerpiecie do swojej muzyki najbardziej inspiracje. Ja przyznam szczerze, że gdy po raz pierwszy usłyszałem waszą EP-ke to brzmienie zwłaszcza gitar odrazu skojarzyło mi się ze szwedzkim death metalem ,z takimi zespołami Jak Entombed albo Dismember (których to zespołów jestem osobiście dość dużym fanem)
Piotr: Są jakieś tam różnice między nami, chociaż jeszcze więcej jest podobieństw. Każdy z nas oczywiście słucha muzyki poza death metalem, jednak komponując utwory zawsze odrzucamy niepasujące nam inspiracje, i staramy się treścią trzymać tradycji. Cieszy mnie, że słyszalne są inspiracje Szwecją, bo chyba żadna scena nie wysrała z siebie tyle złota, haha.
Sentinel: Jakie macie plany na najbliższą przyszłość? Mam na myśli czy po waszej pierwszej znakomitej EP-ce, potem nagracie znowu jakąś EP-kę czy jednak przygotowujecię się już powoli na nagranie pełno grającego albumu?
Piotr: Szykujemy aktualnie nowe utwory, choć nie mamy jeszcze ustalonego planu co do długości wydawnictwa.
Sentinel: Jakie są też wasze plany związane z koncertami? Wiadomo, że obecna sytuacja związana z pandemią bardzo przystopowała koncerty, ale czy powoli upatrujecię już jakieś miejsca gdzie moglibyście zagrać w Polsce, no i jakie są wasze wymarzone festiwale metalowe lub miejsca do zagrania na żywo poza granicami naszego kraju.
Piotr: Kruchy temat, bo właśnie odwołali nam koncert. Na ten moment mamy w planach jeden koncert na kwiecień, i zamierzamy do tego czasu ogarnąć jeszcze jakieś granie, ale kiedy sytuacja się poprawi to chuj jeden wie. A jak już przechodzimy w sferę gdybania, to naprawdę nie pogardzili byśmy graniem na brutal assault, czy extreme obscene. Z Polskich festiwali najbardziej korci nas chyba Metalmania.
Sentinel: Co daje wam taką największą isnpiracje do tworzenia kawałków, czy zbieracie pomysły na wasze dzieła z otoczenia, prywatnych doświadczeń życiowych? a może czerpiecie je z jakiś książek bądź filmów?
Piotr: Zdecydowanie życie. Nie siedzę w głowach chłopaków, ale mnie osobiście sytuacja w kraju i na świecie tak frustruje, że nie potrzebuję się dodatkowo stymulować haha. Chociaż nie powiem, zdarzy mi się też czasem co nie co przemycić z literatury, jak chociażby na epce- nawiązanie do ,, Czekając na Godota" autorstwa Beckett'a.
Sentinel: Gdyby była niedługo jednak taka możliwość na zorganizowanie koncertu, lub moglibyście zagrać przed jakimś polskim zespołem metalowym to jaka by to była ekipa? Tu mam na myśli bardziej, jaki zespół metalowy z naszej ojczystej ziemii bardzo szanujecie i wpłynął również na wasz gust muzyczny i styl grania.
Piotr: Vader, Vader i jeszcze raz VADER. Bez wątpienia nasza wielka inspiracja, i kawał death metalowego mięcha. Poza Vaderem wymienił bym także Betrayer, Azarath, Magnus, Imperator i Xantotol.
Sentinel: Gdy tworzycie swoje utwory bardzo inspirujecie się jakimiś metalowymi kapelami, szukacie z ich utworów jakieś melodii by wymyśleć coś swojego, czy zazwyczaj jest tak, że spotykacie się na próbach i po prostu wymyślacie swoje utwory bardzo naturalnie, mam na myśli to, że po prostu gracie, zaczynacie improwizować i dążycie do wykreowania własnego stylu i brzmienia.
Piotr: Utwory zwykle zaczynamy w pojedynkę, a dopiero potem całość na próbach dopinamy razem. Pisząc nie pochylamy się zbytnio nad cudzymi riffami. Nasze inspiracje zawsze nam towarzyszą, ale raczej mamy je z tyłu głowy.
Sentinel: Jak zaczeła się ogólnie wasza przygoda muzyczna? Mam na myśli, od kiedy już razem gracie, jak się poznaliście jako ekipa i od mniej więcej którego roku gracie razem? A i jeszcze jedno pytanie z ciekawości. Kto z was wpadł na taką nazwę zespołu?
Piotr: Mendax istnieje już od bodajże 2015 roku. Z oryginalnych członków zostałem tylko ja. Z reszta ekipy było różnie. Najpierw dołączył Dawid (gitarowy), który przeprowadził się tu na studia. Z nim poznał mnie stary znajomy, i jakoś tak wyszło, że akurat szukał kapeli, a słyszał już kiedyś wysrywy z poprzedniego składu. Tobiasza (garowy) wyczailiśmy z Dawidem na jakiejś grupie dla muzyków... I tak sobie z nami teraz hula. Adam (basiwo) to w sumie nasz świeży nabytek. Z widzenia kojarzę go już od gimbazy, ale poznałem go dopiero na koncercie. A co do nazwy to jak pisałem haha.
Sentinel: Jak wygląda historia okładki do waszej pierwszej EP-ki i czy kryje się za nią jakaś tajemnica, okładka ma coś ważnego przekazać? czy raczej nie ma co się doszukiwać w niej czegoś głębszego.
Piotr: Oprawą graficzną w Mendaxie zajmuję się ja. Okładka przedstawia czarną materię skrytą za wieloma warstwami naszej podświadomości, i ciałem. Żeby się tu zbytnio nie rozpisywać, jest to nieco abstrakcyjna manifestacja ciągu przyczynowo skutkowego, u którego przyczyną jest ciemność, (czy to stara trauma, czy wrodzone usposobienie), a skutkiem czerwony, agresywny czyn. Można to też odwołać do płyty- agresywna płyta spowodowana naszymi frustracjami.
Sentinel: Jakie są twoje największe inspiracje jeśli chodzi o technikę i brzmienie twojego wokalu (Jacy muzycy najbardziej wpłyneli na twój rozwój muzyczny) No i jacy muzycy wpłynęli na poszczególnych członków waszego zespołu - Mendax.
Piotr: Od początku mojego wokalowania dużą inspiracją był dla mnie Piotr Wiwczarek, Martin Van Drunen, Mikael Åkerfeldt (okres Bloodbath), Craig Pillard i Dolan Ross. Jak chodzi o pozostałych członków, to u Dawida byli to: Rob Barrett, Pat O'Brien, Jeff Hanneman, Chuck Schuldiner, Dimebag Darell. U Adama: Steve Digiorgio, Les Claypool, Cliff Burton. No i u Tobiasza przede wszystkim Trey Williams, George Kollias, James Stewart i Marc Reign. Chociaż jakby się zastanowić, to na pewno byłoby tego masę więcej haha.
Sentinel: Dziękuje ci serdecznie za wywiad i za to, że zgodziłeś, że mogłem go z tobą przeprowadzić. Życzę tobie jak i reszcie zespołu samych sukcesów na scenie metalowej. Myślę, że jest to niezmiernie ważne by wspierać młode utalentowane polskie zespoły metalowe. Czy jest coś co chcecie powiedzieć/przekazać na koniec do waszych fanów i słuchaczy? Może chcecie zdradzić jakiś sekret dotyczący przyszłych planów zespołu, albo uchylić rąbka jakieś tajemnicy.
